What will it take to hold each other as we risk our way toward a new, vibrant future?
This month’s Soul Matters theme, Embracing Possibility, invites us to live that question together. Possibility does more than point to what might be. It shapes who we become as we step into what is not yet clear.
Our April reflection reminds us that “no one makes it down the road of possibility alone.” We discover what is possible by walking together, choosing connection over certainty and presence over perfection. If the path ahead asks anything of us, it asks for courage to hold one another through the long stretch of “not yet.”
And if this work requires courage, we also have to ask: who will do the courageous work of holding us?
In times of uncertainty, it can feel easier to hope that a few leaders will carry the risk for all of us; that the Board or Rev. Carin will sort things out and point the way.
But our tradition invites us into something deeper. It reminds us that our community's strength is not held by a few people leading us into the future. Instead, we hold that strength together when we choose, again and again, to care for each other with intention.
That invitation matters now because the real risk of uncertainty goes beyond making the wrong decision. As a community, we risk drifting apart, misunderstanding one another, or quietly abandoning the relationships that sustain us.
So, if we are all responsible for holding one another, then we also have to ask: what guides us in this work?
Our Covenant of Right Relations calls us to trust one another’s good intentions, listen deeply, and speak with care. It reminds us that each of us plays a part in creating a strong, welcoming community. And when conflict arises, the Covenant guides us to address it directly and respectfully. These shared commitments keep us connected as we navigate uncertainty together.
This month, I invite everyone to put our covenant into practice in everyday conversations. In the pews, over coffee, and in meetings, ask someone:
What possibility for the future of Peoples Church excites you, and what worries you?
What is one thing you hope we will have the courage to try together?
Then listen with curiosity and intention to understand, not to solve. In these small moments, we strengthen the connections that carry us forward.
So what does it take? Covenant, not certainty; presence, not perfection; and all of us choosing again and again to stay connected through the risks ahead.
I cannot promise that every risk will unfold as we imagine, but I can name the promise we make to one another: that no one will walk the road of possibility alone, and that we will meet each step with the courage to hold one another in love along the way.
P.S. Remember to put our Board Brunch on your calendar for Sunday, April 19 at 9:30 a.m. We will answer questions about the proposed bylaw changes and share what we have been working on. Come ask questions and share your ideas about the future of Peoples Church. We’d love to see you there.
In love,
Robyn
