Paying Attention: What Our Governance Asks of Us

“Attention is the beginning of devotion,” writes Mary Oliver. This month’s theme invites us into a shared question: What is Peoples Church devoted to?

Our Board policies call us to govern with “outward vision rather than an internal preoccupation,” and our Ends Statements remind us that “We partner with others to create a fair and just world.” Yet on many days, those commitments feel more aspirational than practiced. We want to act beyond our walls, but we don’t always know where to begin.

One way forward is to look at what we already attend to “on paper,” because our written commitments explain both our priorities as a congregation and how we seek to pursue them.

  • Our mission – Leading compassionate lives through spiritual growth and just action – and our Ends Statements articulate the impact we want to have in the world.

  • Our bylaws and Board policies outline the structures we use to make that impact possible: how we make decisions, share authority, and stay accountable.

Because these documents shape how we support our shared priorities, updating the bylaws helps ensure that our values and our actions remain aligned.

With that in mind, the Board is proposing three bylaw updates for a vote on May 17. In brief, they would:

  • Revise the Treasurer’s role (Article VIII.1.a.iv) so the formal financial report and budget vote take place at the December congregational meeting. This aligns the bylaws with current practice.

  • Set July 1 as the start date for Board terms (Article VII.1.a) to support a smoother handoff. This aligns the bylaws with a well-paced leadership transition, allowing the current Board to finish its work and new Trustees to get oriented.

  • Add a new “unity of control” section (Article VII.3.b) to clarify that only the Board acting as a body may direct the Minister. This aligns the bylaws with our Policy Governance framework.

These changes may seem small, but attending to such details is vital spiritual practice. These revisions strengthen the systems that ground our community’s work, support healthy leadership, and reinforce a clear Board–Minister relationship built on trust.

This work belongs to all of us, because paying attention is a shared spiritual practice at the heart of congregational life. So please join the Board for brunch on Sunday, April 19 at 9:30 AM to walk through the proposed changes. That way, when we gather on May 17, we can choose what we attend to and who we are becoming.

In love,
Robyn
