What Big Questions are Popping Up?
Unitarian Universalists claim this faith as one of a Living Tradition – one known for asking open-ended questions rather than claiming to have all the final answers. How appropriate, then, that this month we are exploring the theme of “Awakening Curiosity."
As the writers of Soul Matters note, one type of curiosity is about enjoyment and adventure – a curiosity that invites us to experience life as a playground. There’s another type of curiosity that leads us not to playgrounds, but into dark alleys and pathless woods. It demands, not just our attention, but our courage.
At the retreat with Worship Artists last summer, we listed some of the “Big Questions” we ask – the curiosities that human beings dive into. This process was both joy-filled and courageous. We came up with these questions, among others:
What is my purpose? Why am I here? Why are we here?
How do we maintain a sense of the positive and the possible in today’s chaotic climate?
How do we survive, confront, change, and impact life’s challenges?
What happens when/after we die?
All of this makes me wonder: What Big Questions would you add to this list?
I look forward to exploring our questions this month – with joy as well as with courage. May we practice Awakening Curiosity together.
With Love at the Center,
Rev. Carin
