What helps you pay attention?
What helps you pay attention? I don’t mean neon signs and louder-than-the-show advertisements. I mean, what helps you pay attention to your divine stillness, to your spirit, to that still small voice within?
For me, singing helps me pay attention.
Years ago I sang in my home congregation’s choir and we’d light a chalice each week to these same words:
“We sing the Beloved Community into being. Breath by breath. Note by note.”
Breathing together and singing together helped me slow down long enough to pay attention to the intangible hope/joy/love that weaves us into a community.
I recently gathered with 13 other music lovers at Peoples Church to imagine what might be possible with a more cohesive Music Ministry at church. We asked questions like:
How does music help PCUU live its mission and embody its end statements?
What might happen if Peoples Church had professional Music Ministry leadership?
What sorts of resources might be needed for a PCUU Music Ministry to be successful?
One of the best things about our gathering was being able to listen to each other. The stories. The memories. The jokes and hopes. We even sang together.
If you wonder what Music Ministry even is, check out the website of the Association for Unitarian Universalist Music Ministries at https://www.auumm.org/
If you’re curious about the Music Ministry at Peoples Church, email me. I would love to listen to your stories, memories, jokes, and hopes.
Growing in Faith,
