Music of the Month — January 2026

The January 2026 Hymn of the Month is “We Are Sunshine in the Streets,” composed by David Burrows.  It can be found in our new virtual hymnal at: https://www.singoutlove.org/ (Contact Rev. Carin to get full access to the Sing Out Love hymnal.)

The song was inspired by the composer’s experience of marching with UUs in Phoenix to protest unjust laws targeting immigrants. The press called the UUs the “yellow shirt people” because of the yellow “Standing on the Side of Love” shirts they wore in the march.

The chorus helps us to imagine embodying our theme of Practicing Resistance:

We are Sunshine in the streets

Singin' Justice!

We are Spirit's hands and feet,

Being Love!

We are yellow shirts of light,

Shinin' Freedom!

We are open hearted might,

Being Love!

Our exclusively curated song from Lea Morris for January 2026’s theme of Practicing Resistance is a song entitled “Turn The Volume Up. This song was inspired by Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City. Listen to “Turn The Volume Up” at: https://youtu.be/5NNI5p3JnVE
